Cutting and polishing of gems
The oldest way of decorating a gemstone is the scratching of figures, symbols, and letters on it.From this, the art of stone cutting developed. The origins of gem cutting can be found in India. Up to about 1400, only the natural crystal faces or cleavage plains of transparent stones were polished in order to give them a higher luster and improved transparency. But even then, opaque stones-mainly agates-were cut and polished with hard sandstone either flat or slightly arched (cabochon), Stone cutting culminates in the faceted stone. There were reports of a faceted diamond in Venice as early 800 A.D but according to other opinions, the facet cut was only developed around the 15th century. For a long time the technique of faceting was kept a strict secret. Since the beginning of modern times, Amsterdam and Antwerp have developed as diamond cutting centers. Idar-Oberstein/Rhineland-Palatinate became the center of agate and colored stone cutting in the 16th century. Nowadays numerous cutting centers are being developed around the world in order to encourage these gemstone cutters.
